The landscape of cricket in the United States is currently navigating a storm, and at the eye of this tempest is USA Cricket (USAC). After being under scrutiny for governance issues for what feels like an eternity, USAC has been extended a temporary reprieve by the International Cricket Council (ICC). They now have three months to clean up their act, especially as the clock ticks down to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where the spotlight on cricket will shine even brighter.
During a meeting of the ICC Board in Singapore, held on July 19, the committee made a pivotal decision to grant USAC this critical extension. The body has faced increasing criticism, not just from cricket fans, but also from the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), underscoring the seriousness of their governance woes. The stakes couldn’t be higher; the relationship between baseball and cricket is often compared, but baseball doesn’t have to wrestle with the complexities of an Olympic future like cricket does in America.
Just to put it into perspective, USAC has been under pressure for nearly a year. Following their last annual conference with the ICC in July 2024, the organization received a warning: it needed to sort out its internal affairs. A committee aimed at normalizing USAC’s operations recently traveled to the U.S. to evaluate progress. Unfortunately, their findings were underwhelming, highlighting a disheartening status quo.
In similar situations, you’d expect the ICC to take decisive action, possibly suspending the member. However, the peculiar circumstance of the USA hosting the Olympics created a sense of urgency but also an avenue for leniency. Thus, the Jay Shah-led ICC decided to grant USAC a much-needed three-month cushion—a decision made amidst the backdrop of a significant annual conference.
Yet the irony isn’t lost on anyone following these developments. Both the U.S. men’s and women’s cricket teams seem poised for automatic qualification for the Olympic Games, but there’s a looming question: Who will select these teams? This adds yet another layer of uncertainty for everyone involved. If USAC manages to fulfill governance criteria within the next three months, will they even be permitted to select the teams by the USOPC? It’s a conundrum that has local and international cricket administrators scratching their heads.
Meanwhile, the ICC has decided to implement a hybrid model for the qualification pathway to LA28. What this means is that some teams will secure spots based on their ICC T20 rankings, while others will have to take part in qualifiers. For instance, India, as the top team in T20 cricket, is almost guaranteed a spot, no matter when the cut-off time occurs.
In addition to these heart-stopping discussions around governance, the ICC Board is also taking steps to address the very structure of the game itself. A working group has been formed to provide recommendations on all three formats of cricket, and we can expect to hear more updates on this as the conference wraps up.
For cricket enthusiasts, especially those cheering for the U.S. teams, these developments create a cocktail of anticipation and concern. As USAC grapples with its governance challenges amid the excitement of approaching Olympic Games, the fate of American cricket hangs in a precarious balance. Many are hoping for a resolution that brings both accountability and success, while also reigniting the passion for cricket in a country where the game holds the promise of a bright future.
